Target Ball Roll
1–4 years · 10–20 min · Indoor · Low energy
You'll need
- Soft ball
- Tape for target line
- Cups or boxes (optional)
Steps
- 1Sit on the floor facing your child — start about 3 feet apart
- 2Roll a soft ball back and forth a few times to get into the rhythm of taking turns
- 3Stick a tape line on the floor between you as a target — can they roll the ball and stop it right on the line?
- 4Set up cups, boxes, or empty containers as targets to roll into — cheer every hit, no matter how close
- 5Count successful rolls together and try to beat your record each round
- 6Gradually move farther apart to increase the challenge as they get the hang of it
Why this works
Rolling a ball toward a target builds hand-eye coordination, arm strength, and the concept of aim and distance — all while practicing turn-taking and patience. The sitting position makes this perfect for tired parents who can play from the couch or floor without getting up. Counting hits sneaks in early number skills.
Try also
- –Use different sized balls — a tennis ball is harder to aim than a big beach ball
- –Set up a hallway bowling alley: stack cups or empty bottles at one end and knock them down
- –Build ramps from books or cardboard and see how far the ball rolls off the end
- –Use tape to mark point zones (1, 2, 3) and keep score
- –Roll two balls at the same time and see whose reaches the target first
- –Try it with different surfaces — carpet vs. hardwood changes the game completely
Use soft balls indoors to avoid breaking things. Keep the rolling path clear of tripping hazards.
