Imaginative Play for 2-Year-Olds
Around two, pretend play sparks to life. They feed the teddy, "talk" on a banana phone, and copy everything you do. It’s the first sign of a big imagination switching on, and it’s lovely to feed.
These ideas keep it simple and familiar. Pretend cooking, putting dolls to bed, a basket of "shopping", caring for soft toys. Two-year-olds pretend best with everyday scenes they recognise from their own day.
You don’t need a play kitchen or fancy sets. Real (safe) pots and spoons, a few soft toys, an empty box. Joining in for a minute often gets the story going.

Tips for Pretend Play at Two
- 1Mirror real life. Cooking, cleaning, and caring for toys are the scenes two-year-olds know best and pretend most happily.
- 2Offer real props. A safe wooden spoon and pot beat plastic gadgets. Familiar objects invite richer pretend.
- 3Model, then step back. Start the story ("the baby’s hungry") then let them take over and lead it.
- 4Keep sets simple. A box and a few items spark more imagination than a single-purpose toy that does everything for them.
