Pillow Stepping Path

You'll need

  • Pillows and cushions
  • Clear floor space

Steps

  1. 1Lay pillows in a path across room
  2. 2Challenge to walk only on pillows
  3. 3The floor is lava!
  4. 4Rearrange and try again

Why this works

Balance challenge with low stakes makes failure fun.

Try also

  • –Add distance between pillows
  • –Time the crossing
  • –Carry something while walking

Pillows can slip, so place them on carpet if possible.

A closer look

Cushions in a line across the room, floor is lava, walk only on the pillows. That is the whole game. Rearrange and do it again. Unlike a tape balance beam, the stepping stones move, so each crossing is a little different.

Start with pillows touching. Gaps come later. On hard floors they slide, so carpet or a rug under the path helps. Carrying a stuffed animal across is a second round when walking it is easy.

Make it easier

  • Put pillows in a tight row with no gaps, and hold a hand.
  • Let them crawl the path instead of walk.
  • Use big sofa cushions so the targets are huge.

Make it harder

  • Leave gaps they have to step over.
  • Carry a toy across without dropping it.
  • Time one crossing, then try to beat it.

Skills this builds

Stepping from cushion to cushion is balance with a wobbly surface, harder than a taped line and still low to the ground.

Common questions

The pillows slide and they fall.
That's expected. Do it on carpet, or put a non-slip rug under the row. Fewer, bigger cushions help. If they get scared, hold both hands and skip the lava talk.
How is this different from a tape balance beam?
A tape line doesn't move. Pillows do, so they have to aim each step. Use the tape game when you want a still line; use this when you want a lava crossing you can rebuild in ten seconds.
