Steps
- 1Start with red and ask your child to find and touch something red anywhere in the room
- 2Once they touch it, call the next rainbow color, orange, and let them hunt for it
- 3Work through the whole rainbow in order, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, then purple
- 4Move with them and narrate, 'you found yellow, the banana', to tie the color to the word
- 5If they get stuck on a tricky color, give a warm hint like 'try looking near the window'
- 6Finish by looking back at everything they touched and naming the colors together one more time
Why this works
Hunting for each color gets your child up and moving while sharpening color recognition and visual scanning, the skill of searching a busy space for one specific thing. Naming what they find grows vocabulary, and holding the rainbow order in their head is early sequencing and memory practice. It needs zero supplies and zero setup, so it is the one you reach for when you have nothing but a few minutes to fill.
