This is real money on the table, not pom poms by color. A three-year-old can feel that a coin is metal, stack it, and start to notice size. Naming penny, nickel, dime is extra; the first job is same-with-same into cups. Sit there the whole time. Coins are a choking hazard.
Dump a small handful, not a jar. Two or three types is enough. A piggy bank at the end closes the loop if they like posting things through a slot. Muffin-tin sorting is the safer version with food or pom poms; use coins only when they are past mouthing and you can watch.
Matching real coins by size and feel is tactile sorting plus early money names, with a pincer grasp on a thin, slippery object.
